On Ethernet, a segment is determined by the maximum permitted length of an Ethernet cable. Within a segment, network subscribers can be addressed directly via the Ethernet address. The max. permitted extension of a segment can be increased using Repeaters or Bridges. In order to communicate with network subscribers in other networks you will need devices such as Routers or Gateways, for example.
