CANopen

CANopen is a communications protocol that is mainly used in automation technology and for networking within vehicles and complex devices. The communications protocol is based on the serial bus system CAN (Controller Area Network), which was developed in the early 1980s. Both CAN and CANopen are international standards.


Structure

The subscribers are generally connected to the CANopen network via 5-pin open style connectors, 5-pin M12 or 9-pin Sub-D connectors. A maximum of 127 subscribers can be connected in a CANopen network. The communication speed can be set in defined increments in the range from 10 kbit/s to 1 Mbit/s. The length of the CANopen network depends on the communication speed.
