Safety brake

A safety brake decelerates moving loads or holds them safely at standstill. On safety brakes, the braking power is generated via pre-tensioned springs. Safety brakes have electromagnetic, hydraulic or pneumatic ventilation. In a de-energised state, they are closed. As a result they satisfy safety aspects in all operating conditions, including emergency stop and power failure. The task of safety brakes is to securely protect staff from injury and plant from damage.

A safety brake is more generously sized than a holding brake, given that the focus is on personal safety. As required by C standards, some safety brakes on the market are available with type examination.

Braking occurs at high torque and they are used for repeated braking of the load because a high level of friction work is possible. Just like holding brakes, safety brakes are also subject to wear. Despite the safety brake, therefore, the motor must still carry out periodic braking processes through a controlled delay ramp. With dual-circuit protection, the motor brake and safety brake can be combined.
