PILZ leads safety in advanced robotics of the European project ODIN
Within the framework of European innovation, a little over 4 years ago, the ODIN Project was born, an ambitious project funded by the European Union that brings together institutions, companies, and research centers from across Europe. PILZ has led the safety and risk assessment aspects, playing a key role in ensuring that the technologies developed meet the highest safety standards.
The objectives of the ODIN project are as follows:
- Introduce mobile, autonomous, collaborative, and environmentally friendly robotics into industrial environments.
- Develop digital validation tools that facilitate scalability with low integration risk.
- Commercialize a robotic integration platform that connects design with real production conditions.-
- Implement large-scale industrial demonstrators in diverse sectors.-
- Create a sustainable innovation ecosystem that inspires new robotic applications.
What was PILZ's role in system safety?
PILZ led the security and risk assessment efforts within ODIN, designing and validating the Safety-Related Parts of Control Systems (SRP/CS) for applications such as autonomous mobile manipulators, reconfigurable tools, and perception systems. The company ensured full compliance with technical and legal standards by conducting thorough risk assessments, from the initial design to pilot validation, using advanced tools and international standards such as ISO 10218, ISO 3691, and ISO/TS 15066.
Participation in ODIN has had a direct and tangible impact on PILZ's business strategy, particularly in the evolution of its offering of safe and collaborative robotics services. Thanks to the developments made, the company has been able to:
- Incorporate digital twins and safety simulation
- Develop a comprehensive safety methodology
- Strengthen their strategic positioning
- Expand their service portfolio
